I was rushing through the store up and down the isles hurriedly grabbing the few items I needed that late Monday afternoon. Sadly, this was my normal state of being-rushing and hurried. Finally done…checked out…car loaded…cart returned…YAYYY!! Ready to go!
On my way back to the car I saw this older woman struggling to load her groceries. She was down to her last bag as I approached. In that moment “this voice”, clear as day said to me
“Offer to return her cart”
I immediately responded “No”.
No sooner had I responded “No” than it become clear I must.
After a series of short mental protestations, I turned around and approached the older woman.
“Can I take that cart back for you?” I asked
“Why?” she snapped, “because I’m old?”
I paused. Out of nowhere, and by no means of my own, “the voice” had me responding:
“No, because God told me to”
Her face softened, her eyes filled with tears, her walls came down and she cried. I was profoundly humbled. Thanking me profusely, she gently pushed her cart to me and I thanked her. As I walked away returning the cart, my eyes filled with tears, my walls came down, and I cried.
We laid eyes on each other one last time as we drove out of the store’s parking lot. We waived goodbye to each other as if we were old friends. She was beaming. So was I. I’ve never seen her again. I will never forget what she taught me that day about humility and kindness…
